Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the state of Georgia, and the central city of ninth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. It is the county seat of Fulton County, although a portion of the city extends into DeKalb County. Atlanta sits atop a ridge south of the Chattahoochee River. One of seven American cities classified as Gamma world cities, Atlanta ranks third in the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in its metropolitan area. Its airport -- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport -- is the world's busiest, both in terms of passenger traffic and landings and takeoffs. The city's northern section, Buckhead, is consistently ranked by the Robb Report as one of the most affluent communities in the United States, comparable to Los Angeles' Bel-Air and Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Atlanta has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters by the standards of the U.S.

Atlanta boasts a variety of museums on subjects ranging from history to fine arts, natural history, and beverages. Prominent among them are sites honoring Atlanta's participation in the civil rights movement. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in the city, and his boyhood home on Auburn Avenue in the Sweet Auburn district is preserved as the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. The arts are represented by several theaters and museums, including the Fox Theatre. The Woodruff Arts Center is home to the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony, High Museum of Art, and Atlanta College of Art.

Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad line (it was first named Marthasville in honor of the then-governor's daughter, nicknamed Terminus for its rail location, and then changed soon after to Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic -- as in the railroad). Today the fast-growing city remains a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world. Direct flights to Europe, South America, and Asia have made metro Atlanta easily accessible to the more than 1,000 international businesses that operate here and the more than 50 countries that have representation in the city through consulates, trade offices, and chambers of commerce. The city has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for 13 Fortune 500 companies.

Living, working, residing, staying in a place for an extended period of time -- these words define a resident. Atlanta residents reside and value neighbors, neighborhoods and community. Their neighborhoods contain rich Atlanta history, leaders who have 'stepped out' to make a difference, artistic shopping areas and restaurants that salute our rich cultural diversity. Parks, add more green space to tree lined streets, where the echo of children voices, the joggers fading footsteps and workers spinning to the job place, can be heard on any given day.
